In 2003 The Tunnel Rats released Underground Rise: Sunrise/Sunset with quite possibly the most guest appearances on a Christian Hip Hop album ever. Now six years later Cas Metah has released Guest Room with over 40 guest appearances from artists all over the Christian Hip Hop world, East Coast, West Coast and everything in between, Cas even brings some underground artists from the OH10 to join the party. Guest appearances from members of the Tunnel Rats, DeepSpace5, The Remnant, The Scribbling Idiots, Lightheaded, Future Shock and other artists. Production is also done from all whole spectrum of producers, Dust, Playdough, Vintage, Theory Hazit, Dert and once again many others. So Cas brought the guest appearances (which is a plus in my book) but do these guests deliver on this album?

So after listening to a message from Playdough (where Play-Doug-H calls Cas out on his “frail” body) we are introduced to the first track on the album “I Strain” featuring Cas Metah’s partner in crime JustMe and an appearance from the Cunninlynguists. The track at least in my eyes is about how we have to struggle to accomplish the things we want to in life. JustMe handles a verse and the hook on the track, but most importantly the production is solid on this track (and most of the album for the most part).

The track “Front Runner” is the first out of three tracks that has a whole slew of guest appearances from all over the Christian Hip Hop world. “Front Runner” features Ahred, Sojourn, Ajax Starglider (Future Shock), Sintax The Terrific (DeepSpace5), Sev Statik (DeepSpace5/Tunnel Rats), Griffin (Tunnel Rats) and JustMe (Scribbling Idiots). It’s basically the mainstream rap beat down track and I love it, Griffin’s verse is my favorite verse on that track where he acts as a tour guide and mentor for those who want to be “Front Runners”:

“So you want to be Front Runner huh, be a vicious contender
My name is Griff, let me aid you in your business venture
Any rumor you heard about it is nonsense
Acquiring the title is a serious process”

The “Told You So (remix)” is produced by Theory Hazit and features Masta Ace (who was on the “Told You So” original which is on The Have Nots), JustMe and we also get a verse from Theory Hazit. This is one of my favorite tracks from the album, it’s pretty much a battle rap track and all the emcees kill their verse. Theory lets you know “that there’s no punk in my DNA”, Masta Ace that even though “I’m old in age I control the stage” and Cas Metah has one of my favorite lines on this album “Now I’m rocking on the stage, already waiting for haters to fall in line…got them mad at Cas for collaborating with greatest of all time”. After listening to the entire album (Because I was so happy just to have the album) I went back and listened to this (and a couple other songs numerous times….after finally moving on to listen to JustMe’s Before The Twilight)

Since there space constraints with this I have to skip a couple of memorable songs on this album (“Real feat. Mouf Warren and Holmskillet”, “Rhyme Life feat. Listener and Ruffian”, “Die Trying feat. Chapter 13”, “Find Time feat. BC and Playdough) which brings us to “2nd Second (see what he did with the title HA!)” this features Every Day Martyrs (Griffin and Mouf Warren) and Deuce Complex (who I’m not exactly familiar with, but I do know him and Cas made a mixtape a while ago). I can’t remember who produced the beat but the beat has kind of a dark feel to it. I love the hook that Cas used for this song it fits the beat perfectly.

Hopefully by now you’ve been convinced that this album is worth buying, but if you haven’t been convinced yet, the track “Don’t Doubt” featuring Theory Hazit, Wonder Brown, K-Drama, Kaz, Mouf Warren, Griffin and Intellect who all happen to be emcees from OHIO. I love this track, but my opinion is somewhat bias since I live in Twinsburg, Ohio but the production is also solid. This song is all about Ohio Pride and is just a fun track to listen to production and the lyrics are solid.

Guest Room is the Christian Hip Hop catalog that people that are on the fence about whether or not they should listen to Christian Hip Hop need to listen to. I highly doubt that anyone will be able to top the number of guest appearances on this album and it was nice to hear different voices from all over the Christian Hip Hop world. Go pick up Guest Room LIKE RIGHT NOW!!!!!

The Good

OVER 40 GUESTS!!!
Production from all types of producers
Memorable verses from just about every song on this album
The Bonus Track!!!
The beats from Theory Hazit (“Told You So”) and Muneshine (“Laying the Foundation)

The Bad

The album kind of loses steam towards the end of the album

Rating: 4.5/5 (ALMOST CLASSIC GET THE ALBUM KIDS!!!)

If You Can’t Buy The Album (and you better) Download These Songs

Theory Hazit has been on the top of his game for some time now, releasing Lord Fire last summer and releasing Modern Marvels this summer, how did this all start. Theory has released instrumentals, remix albums, mixtapes, but his first solo release was under the HipHop Is Music record label. Extra Credit was released in 2007 and it’s weird I’m just now reviewing it because I’ve had for about a year and a half now. When I first heard Theory Hazit two summers ago, I wasn’t the biggest fan, but once I heard him on Surreal’s Future Classic album I was sold and wanted to hear more from him. After that I picked his mixtape The Special Education of Theory Hazit and his talented shined on that mixtape, so I went and picked up Extra Credit. It has been on my Zune for a long time and I listened to about half the album and always skipped through the rest. It wasn’t until yesterday (when I was forced to do some yard work) that I went through the whole Extra Credit album from Track 1 to Track 15. The result…well read the review!
From the start of Extra Credit you already know you’re about to listen to an amazing album. Production on this album is done by many, Kero One, Tony Stone, Vintage and a bunch of others. After the first two tracks (“Lesson In Power” and “Gossip Synopsis”) comes Mrs. Hazit, which can be interpreted three different ways. It’s either about Theory’s wife, Theory’s ideal woman, or none of the above and I have no idea what I’m talking about. The beat contains piano in the background making one of my favorites on the album.
The first single released of the album “I Just Wanna Go Home” is an open book to Theory’s life before he found Christ. Honestly, I love this song because I can strongly relate to it. I too have a past that I’m not exactly proud of, but like Theory Christ found us and us on the right track. Theory’s future partner in crime Vintage produced this track and two others on this album. This is why Theory is one of my favorite artist because he isn’t afraid to talk about his past experiences to show that anybody can change with the Power of Christ.
“Dumb Dunces” is a somewhat funny track with a strong underlying message and a guest appearance from Cincinnati’s own K-Drama. The message at least from what I understand, is “hey, guess what we go school to learn, so quit goofing off and get down to business so you can make a future for yourself”. The beat is actually includes a sample from Scooby-Doo with a hip hop touch to it and it works (Theory actually did the same thing with the “Herman Munster” track by Phonetic Composition, he used a sample from The Munsters theme song).
Theory’s from the heart lyrics continue on “Hello Kiddiez” which wasn’t my favorite track of the album until I listened to it yesterday. The beat has a passionate feel to it and once again you get an insight to Theory’s life. “Hello Kiddiez” is a track where Theory shouts out to his kids and kids he has an impact on that he considers “his sons”. Here’s what I mean:

“…At first you showing signs of fear
And I wanted to beat the fear outta you
You are my son even though I’m not your real dad
Anything in life that you want I’ll help you get that
Just remember to stay focus and praise Jehovah
And play the game till game’s over I ain’ jokin’
Never give up, never give in especially
when it doesn’t look like you’ll goin’ win
See this is comin’ from a friend of a friend
Don’t be afraid to speak up and if I taught
You anything yo I taught you Jesus”

I really wish I had enough page space to tell about all the songs that I love on this album, but I’m already over the page limit. In fact in a perfect world I’d cover 5 of the last 6 songs on the album…anyway I’m digressing. “After School Special” is the “loaded” guest appearance track featuring JustMe and Sojourn, it’s pretty much a battle rap track that is quite entertaining. “IOU” is right after that and features the founder of the HipHop Is Music Braille. Theory raps apologies to people he knows he’s hurt and been a bad example to. It’s another lyrically meaningful track on this album.
So if you haven’t noticed this album amazing and a classic that should be in every hip hop owner’s collection it’s that good. Lyrically Theory holds nothing back and lets the listener inside his whole world. Now this album isn’t as good as Lord Fire but the volume is actually perfect. Basically if you like music pick up Theory Hazit’s Extra Credit and go pick up Modern Marvels this summer. It should be interesting to see if Theory can keep up this string of classic albums.

Good

Everything about this album

Theory doesn’t hold back on this album at all

Beats are hot! (with production Vintage, Tony Stone and others)

Bad

Nothing!

Rating: 5/5 (CLASSIC GO PICK IT UP IF YOU LIKE MUSIC!!!)

If You Can’t Buy The Album Pick Up These Songs

Hello Kiddiez
IOU feat. Braille
Decisions feat. Sivion and Holmskillet produced by Vintage
After School Special feat. JustMe and Sojourn
I Just Wanna Go Home produced by Vintage

Wonder Brown, MC Till thanks for stopping by.

Ok, so give us some background on how you guys got started as rappers individually.

So the Kings of Tragedy are fresh off of their debut release and they were kind enough to stop by the blog…

Wonder Brown, MC Till thanks for stopping by.
T: No problem. Thanks for having us.
B: YO!

Ok, so give us some background on how you guys got started as rappers individually.
T: I was about 5 years old in Evansville, IN. Hip-hop was beginning to spread from the coasts to the midwest. My brother first caught wind of it. I wanted to be like big brother so I started doing it. For my brother it was something cool at the time. For me it was the beginning of a life long relationship. I loved Hip-hop back then and still do to this day.
B: I grew up loving hip hop, and always wanted to make music, but first got into it almost 6 years ago, when i met Theory Hazit. I was just getting into performance poetry, and an off-and-on friend asked me to tag along to a studio session, telling me of this dude who’s “just getting started and is right up your alley.” I ended up rapping my first verse that night and developing a really close relationship with Theory. Look at me now, ma!!

As individuals and as group what motivates you guys musically and spirtually?
T: As an individual I believe music is very spiritual. Some music just moves me. There is something about a sample and a bassline and a dope drum and an mc or singer flowing just right. It does something to me spiritually. And it doesn’t even have to be from an artist who considers himself spiritual. The teachings of Jesus no doubt motive me. I especially like the idea of God being all powerful chose to manifest in the flesh of someone who was poor and oppressed. That motivates me to continously rethink what it means to live on this earth. As a group, I think good conversation and fellowship motivate us. We like to talk about all kinds of stuff from personal to spiritual to music to business, etc…
B: I’m a poet first, so I was once told by a teacher (an atheist at that) that my gift was “given to me” and that I was “obligated to share it with the world.” The world around me is an inspiration, both good and bad, and my job is to translate it. When you look at the world around you in an honest manner, you see the beauty of it, you see the brokenness, and you realize the connection of this life and the next’s. As a group, I love and relate to the drive for excellence in Till, and a true lack of ego that shapes our bond. In the end, we’re both just two simple guys with big dreams.

Who did you guys listen to while you guys we’re growing up and who do you listen to now?
T:I listend to a lot of the native tongues (De La Soul, Tribe Called Quest especially). I listen to about the same now (De La, Q-tip, Common, the Roots). I like music that is fun, but is also intellegent.
B: I love soul… Not really a particular sound, or particular words, but just the right combination. I think you can hear someone’s soul in music, and I want that honest, that truth that only a soulful song can bring. When I first heard Nas, Coldplay, Led Zeppelin, Steely Dan, Dylan, the Supremes, Robert Johnson, I could feel the spirit of the music and truly appreciated where it was coming from. But I loved pop music as well, as long as I could feel the soul. Same goes for today.

Kings of Tragedy….what got you guys thinking “Hey we’re pretty good rappers let’s be good rappers together”?
T: We’re pretty good rappers? huh?
B: Lol, I had known Till for only a short time, but we seemed to click when we would have convo about even the simplest of things. I had known of him through mutual friends, but really only a handful of months when we connected one weekend and he offered to take me to Pittsburgh with him. He gave me some of his stage-time that weekend, and we rocked an impromptu show together; and I do mean rocked it! Next thing I know, we’re inviting each other to solo appearances and conceiving new ideas for show presentation, which we sorta just always did in the car. The Kings of Tragedy was birthed out of that fellowship and willingness to forego the solo route and share in the experience; and came to fruition when I decided, almost on a whim, to move to the west coast and remembered that Till would be traveling to Oregon to see family for spring break. A little over a year ago, we toured our way out west and had a blast. When I decided to move back to Ohio, we went back to the drawing board and decided to make this a more vested affair…there’s much more to the story, but you get the picture.

Both you tell me something about the rhymestyle of your counterpart.
T: Let me break down Wonder’s rhyme style in an equation…
in the pocket delivery + a bunch of words X fast forward = Wonder Brown’s Rhyme Style. Wonder Brown takes you to a place where you have to really listen and think. His rhymestyle is aggressive and metaphorical. You might know what he’s getting at. You might not. You have to invest the time to digest it. Usually, I don’t have that time on my hands so I’m not sure what he’s talking about half the time.
B: Wow…Till really broke that down for you. His is a lot simpler; simple guy + laid back lyrics + mic + stage x zeal for life = MC (Till)

Now I’m not sure who produced the album but it’s like that person threw all these vintage sounds in a blender and released it. What came out was a beautifilly made smoothie of sounds. How did this come about and what was the motivation behind the beats?
T: Actually, the way you described it is exactly how we made the beats. I traded in my autographed George Forman Cooker for an autographed J. Dilla Blenda. It is put out through ‘Dilla Blends’ Through advanced technology, all you have to do is buy some records that look they are from the late 60’s early 70’s, throw them into the Dilla Blenda, wait about 35 minutes for the blenda to process, and bam, you got a delicious plate of beats. Okay, seriously, I did the beats with Wonder Brown co-producing several of them. Originally, we were going to pay other producers to make beats for us. But, then we realized that would cost money. So, I made the suggestion that we just do the beats. I was half serious. Wonder jumped on it right away and started listening to the MC Till beat catalog that day. Personally, I love making beats. Making beats for me is like therapy. I really enjoy it.
B: While on tour, we listened to a lot of De La Soul, and just reminisced to when music was fun. Interestingly enough, that vibe really just permeated our souls, and added to the experience of the tour. Although those dudes weren’t preaching Christ, the vibe was edifying, and the spirit was alive everywhere we’d go. When we came back to Ohio after the second tour last year, we still had that experience alive in us, and wanted to channel it into a possible project that we could perform with. At the time, we were just mixing stuff from his solo album “Beautiful Raw”, and a few other projects including the Scribbling Idiots record “The Have Nots”; we just wanted to step our game up, so to speak, and have something we could perform together and sell right on the spot – before, we had impromptu songs that we performed, and people would ask us which album had that song. OOps!!…Well, oops no more. Till killed the beats and I did my co-production “put this there” “take that out” thing!!!

So what message we’re you guys trying to convey with this album?
T: Joy.
B: Freedom.

Now it’s great to hear collab material with the two of you, but we barely hear any solo material from you guys. Wonder I know you released The Wake a couple years ago and MC you released the Beautiful Raw at around the same time. Where’s the NEW SOLO STUFF!!
T: Wonder Brown release ‘The Wake?’ When did this happen? Why don’t I have a copy? My next project is called “Grass cutters and Poppy Seed Heads.” Just kidding. But seriously, don’t steal that title. I’m working on my next project right now. And unless an indie label approaches me I’m sticking with the independent thing. I love having full control over the music and I get paid all the money. Sweet.
B: I really invested myself in “The Have Nots”, and have continually learned about the craft, so that when I step up to the bigs with my solo effort, I’m knocking it out the park. I have a solo album almost complete, entitled “Just Another Wonderful Life”, and another EP in the wake of “The Wake” entitled “The Gallows.” I have another EP that will come out first, that is produced completely by Thought P, as well as a record that I’m in the last stages of mixing and mastering entitled The Darke Bros – a group with CASMETAH and myself….that joint is blaze and will be out later this year…lotta stuff on the plate, but it IS coming.

Lastly what projects are you working on now.
T: I’m working on a marriage project. It has to do with me being a good husband to my wife! It’s called til death do us part!!!! On the music front, I’m working on my next album. Every once in a while k-Drama and I talk about doing another “Black Guy Meets White Man” album. We’ll see.
B: Oops, already answered that…but there is one more project I’m working on – a record with my good friend Sean Little produced completely by Vintage entitled “A Love aPhiliated” – which is almost done. Soulful stuff, man!

Ok, thanks for stopping by anything else you want to let the readers know before you go?
T: Yes, if you want to talk to me just hit me up at 812-430-4464! Peace.
B: And 513-304-8664 for the Wonder Brown hotline…BigUps to the Sto for all the love!!!

With Braille’s Cloud Nineteen getting in the spotlight a couple of albums have kind of gone under the radar…The Kings of Tragedy are one such group. The Kings of Tragedy are a new group, but the group is made of two household names in the Christian Hip Hop world. MC Till and Wonder Brown are the tag team that make up the Kings of Tragedy. Some should remember MC Till from his other tag team project that he did with K-Drama, some should know Wonder Brown from his Scribbling Idiots crew. The two come together to make a rather unique album.

The best thing that makes this album special is the fact that when MC Till and Wonder Brown got together to do this album they made sure they had fun doing it and it shows numerous times during the album. From the first track on the album “Bless Your Soul” you know you’re about to go on a ride you’ll never forget.

Two tracks later I noticed something the third track isn’t a song IT’S A SKIT! The first skit “Famous Musicians” is a pretty funny track, so I skipped most of the songs to find more skits and there ended being about five skits. The skits actually put a satirical view on Hip Hop which found interesting and very entertaining I honestly listened to last skit “Infomercial Superstars” about 10-20 times in row it’s that funny.

Back to the music, as you progress through the album the tracks “Fun Factor” continues to rise. The epitome of this is “Cincinnati Summer” is one of the best examples of a banger that you play in the car (with the stereo bumped to 20) on a nice summer day. The production behind this beat is my favorite on the album and has that summer time feel to it. MC Till and Wonder Brown both rhyme on the environment they live in that we know as Cincinnati, Ohio. Wonder Brown also ventures into an area that I’ve never heard him in before…he’s singing. And it’s not amazing, but it’s better than I thought it would be and it actually goes well with the music.

After a skit about not having skits in an album (see what they did there HA!) the album moves on to “Puzzling Thing” where Wonder Brown again showcases his mad singing skills. Another plus to this album (this song included) is the Vintage feel that is seen through numerous songs on the album, “Morning Love” (feat. Cas Metah), “The Road” and a track that is really starting to grow on me “Wonderfully Delicious”.

“Wonderfully Delicious” features K-Drama and Chandre who handle the chorus of the song (the chorus is so addictive I find myself singing along with it and replaying the chorus about 20 times, NO JOKE!!). The track is your vintage love song and it’s one you’ll be rotating for a long time (it might also give you the urge to go and other vintage love songs in your collection.

The Kings of Tragedy do something that I haven’t heard in a while, they made a fun album, just by listening to the album you can tell the duo had fun making it. The vintage production with seemingly satirical skits about hip hop that are funny makes this album a definite listen. The one knock I have against the album is that the lyrics aren’t very thought-provoking but what they lack in that department they make up for in just overall fun having a good time. Get this album and lets pray we see a sophomore album by these two very soon

Good

Just an overall fun album

Vintage sounding production

Cas Metah, Theory Hazit, K-Drama and Chandre are guests

The Skits are hilarious

Bad

The album lacks some lyricism

Rating: 4/5 (Great Album for your

Collection, GO GET IT!!!)

If You Can’t Buy The Album Download These Songs

Cincinnati Summer

Morning Love feat. Cas Metah

Wonderfully Delicious feat. K-Drama and Chandre

Puzzlin’ Thing
