Sev Statik, Da Pointman, whatever you call him the man is work horse, he juggles being a part of two of the best groups in Christian Hip Hop: The Tunnel Rats and DeepSpace5, while continuing to put out albums from his solo career. Before Back to Dust, Shotgun and some of the group projects Sev Statik released Speak Life which for the most part was produced by The Tunnel Rats own Dert. So if you take Sev Statik’s ability to put the world under a microscope, while teaching you a lesson and Dert’s insane ability to produce amazing beats what do you get. I’ll tell you what that means:

Sev Statik + Dert=CLASSIC!

One amazing thing about this album is the album’s format, it has the perfect balance of solo tracks and guest appearance tracks. I kinda like to think of the album as Sev Statik and The Tunnel Rats, because if one of the Tunnel Rat emcees don’t have a verse you can hear Raphi or Macho handling the hook on a track and it’s great. In fact every Tunnel Rat is on this album except Griffin and Triune (who eventually get their chance on Back to Dust).

After the intro and the first track “All For A Purpose” we get a posse cut called “Warning” which features new Tunnel Rat members (at least they were new at the time) Dokument and Propaganda. For the most part the track says “hey guess what we’re the Tunnel Rats don’t mess with us because we might destroy you…..lyrically anyway”.

Sev Statik handles a lot of topics (I mean A LOT of topics), but two of them always tend to stand out: his outlook on us as a nation and the rap business. “Over the Influence” handles the idea of the mainstream rap business being corrupt. The mainstream raps lies and rappers like Sev Statik bring the truth on every track. Sev stays “Over the Influence” by reading the Word. “Global” is another track where Sev raps on his frustration of the mainstream the only difference is he brings LPG along for the ride. I’ll put it this way if decide that you wanna battle LPG or Sev this track should make you reconsider your decision.

Now the title track on this album is my favorite for many reasons, one the beat is amazing, second Dax destroys the hook and third Sev hits you with so many important subjects it’ll make your head spin. Sev’s first verse talks about he speaks life when he’s rapping these words the line that sticks out most to me is:

“Serving fiends for free cuz my gift is my music, pushing the world to move souls and not units”

The second verse is all about how Sev’s outlook has changed and how he hopes we will live our life’s to the best of our ability. He says when writes his verses he does in God’s name. He goes on to tell us some things that will only help us in this world: staying unique and not conforming to the world’s ways and not being lazy. Sev’s last verse is where Sev talks about us as a nation pretty much saying the Bush Administration (who was “in control” of the country at the time) contradicts what God would have us do. For example, Sev brings up the fact after 9/11, the Bush Administration as we know went to war with Afghanistan, not because they want to defend us from terrorism, but for other reasons. Basically this track should make you think about a lot of things, yourself and the nation that we’re in.

Speak life is a classic album straight up and I think it’s Sev Statik’s best album to date. The lyricism and the topics Sev covers a multitude of topics. Production was great Dert and Peace 586 did amazing on the beats. It had the perfect balance of guest and solo tracks with almost every Tunnel Rat made an appearance on the album. Get the album if you don’t well…you’re an idiot!

In 2003 The Tunnel Rats released Underground Rise: Sunrise/Sunset with quite possibly the most guest appearances on a Christian Hip Hop album ever. Now six years later Cas Metah has released Guest Room with over 40 guest appearances from artists all over the Christian Hip Hop world, East Coast, West Coast and everything in between, Cas even brings some underground artists from the OH10 to join the party. Guest appearances from members of the Tunnel Rats, DeepSpace5, The Remnant, The Scribbling Idiots, Lightheaded, Future Shock and other artists. Production is also done from all whole spectrum of producers, Dust, Playdough, Vintage, Theory Hazit, Dert and once again many others. So Cas brought the guest appearances (which is a plus in my book) but do these guests deliver on this album?

So after listening to a message from Playdough (where Play-Doug-H calls Cas out on his “frail” body) we are introduced to the first track on the album “I Strain” featuring Cas Metah’s partner in crime JustMe and an appearance from the Cunninlynguists. The track at least in my eyes is about how we have to struggle to accomplish the things we want to in life. JustMe handles a verse and the hook on the track, but most importantly the production is solid on this track (and most of the album for the most part).

The track “Front Runner” is the first out of three tracks that has a whole slew of guest appearances from all over the Christian Hip Hop world. “Front Runner” features Ahred, Sojourn, Ajax Starglider (Future Shock), Sintax The Terrific (DeepSpace5), Sev Statik (DeepSpace5/Tunnel Rats), Griffin (Tunnel Rats) and JustMe (Scribbling Idiots). It’s basically the mainstream rap beat down track and I love it, Griffin’s verse is my favorite verse on that track where he acts as a tour guide and mentor for those who want to be “Front Runners”:

“So you want to be Front Runner huh, be a vicious contender
My name is Griff, let me aid you in your business venture
Any rumor you heard about it is nonsense
Acquiring the title is a serious process”

The “Told You So (remix)” is produced by Theory Hazit and features Masta Ace (who was on the “Told You So” original which is on The Have Nots), JustMe and we also get a verse from Theory Hazit. This is one of my favorite tracks from the album, it’s pretty much a battle rap track and all the emcees kill their verse. Theory lets you know “that there’s no punk in my DNA”, Masta Ace that even though “I’m old in age I control the stage” and Cas Metah has one of my favorite lines on this album “Now I’m rocking on the stage, already waiting for haters to fall in line…got them mad at Cas for collaborating with greatest of all time”. After listening to the entire album (Because I was so happy just to have the album) I went back and listened to this (and a couple other songs numerous times….after finally moving on to listen to JustMe’s Before The Twilight)

Since there space constraints with this I have to skip a couple of memorable songs on this album (“Real feat. Mouf Warren and Holmskillet”, “Rhyme Life feat. Listener and Ruffian”, “Die Trying feat. Chapter 13”, “Find Time feat. BC and Playdough) which brings us to “2nd Second (see what he did with the title HA!)” this features Every Day Martyrs (Griffin and Mouf Warren) and Deuce Complex (who I’m not exactly familiar with, but I do know him and Cas made a mixtape a while ago). I can’t remember who produced the beat but the beat has kind of a dark feel to it. I love the hook that Cas used for this song it fits the beat perfectly.

Hopefully by now you’ve been convinced that this album is worth buying, but if you haven’t been convinced yet, the track “Don’t Doubt” featuring Theory Hazit, Wonder Brown, K-Drama, Kaz, Mouf Warren, Griffin and Intellect who all happen to be emcees from OHIO. I love this track, but my opinion is somewhat bias since I live in Twinsburg, Ohio but the production is also solid. This song is all about Ohio Pride and is just a fun track to listen to production and the lyrics are solid.

Guest Room is the Christian Hip Hop catalog that people that are on the fence about whether or not they should listen to Christian Hip Hop need to listen to. I highly doubt that anyone will be able to top the number of guest appearances on this album and it was nice to hear different voices from all over the Christian Hip Hop world. Kaboose who is extended family of the Scribbling Idiots has the ability that not a lot of other emcees have. He can sing and rap at the same time (ala Elias and Dax). I first heard Kaboose on the SI posse cut “Driven” and I can’t lie the first two lines of his verse hit me and made me want to listen.

“I’m not the one to go for the throat with them battle type tactics

I aim to maintain and keep your head bouncing’ like a mattress”

Kaboose released his first solo album in 2004 and showcased his talent to the world and let me tell you, you do NOT wanna miss out on this release.

Yes I’m just going to tell you straight up this album is a CLASSIC! If you read the review to Jurny Big’s album I said that most of the album is battle rap. Well Kaboose’s album Innersection is the exact opposite, every single song on this album hits you hard with thought-provoking lyrics. By the end of the album you’ve examined every inch of your spiritual self and you feel confident in what you set out to accomplish.

The album starts off strong with bang with “Just Rock” where Kaboose just hits you with verse after verse of lyrics that make you think. Now the it’s not just the lyrics that makes this album classic the beats are well made also the hard hitting bass with the intense piano in the back makes this track a banger.

After a guest appearance from Kid Sundance and Phenom, you get a guest appearance from Mr. 518 (that’s Sev Statik for those out of the loop). The track “Can’t Call It” is actually part of at least in my opinion the 4 of the 5 best tracks on the album. “Can’t Call It” handles both the topic of listening to those around you and just you’re overall opinion of yourself. This track also showcases Kaboose’s singing talent (which isn’t seen too much on this album).

The song after that is “Voices” and most listeners should be able to relate to this track hardcore. The complex subject of Life is the topic of this song and it covers the stresses of life. The challenge of trying to be your own person in a society where if you don’t conform to what they believe you are ridiculed. The chorus with the woman singer takes the track to the next level.

After that the track “Sleep” comes up and features Braille, but due space constraints (LOL) I’ll move onto the last in the 4 track set “Slowly Dying” featuring Scribbling Idiots Elias (another singer/rapper combo). Elias handles the hook and a verse with this track and it handles being satisfied with the life you’ve choose for yourself. We should be happy with the direction that God is taking even though it may be painful.

My favorite NUMBER 1 track is “I’ll Try” featuring Obstacle. The track is as the title says, we will stumble and fall A LOT in our lives it’s a matter of getting back up and continuing to push on even when things seem bad. The chorus further pushes the message and is my favorite part of the song where Kaboose and Obstacle trade lines.

“Some will live, some will die

Some will laugh, some will cry

Some will crawl some will fly

Some will fall…I still try”

Kaboose’s debut album definitely went under the radar and should be picked up by all hip hop fans. I’m gonna be honest here after I did my review listen, I started the album over again and listened to the whole thing and then had going one more time as I was in bed. So get this and you won’t be disappointed plus you’re faith in God should increase and should allow for some introspection on the listener.
